Helping You Succeed in College,
Graduate School & Beyond

Personalized academic consulting and planning by real experts who care.

What is Scarab Academics?

Empowering Students to Succeed On Their Own Terms

College and graduate school can be overwhelming.  People often feel adrift in navigating the experience, with help and guidance sparsely coming, especially at larger institutions or if college is not the only life challenge you are navigating.

We are a consulting service devoted to helping you complete undergraduate or graduate degree programs. We specialize in helping troubled students who are on academic probation or who have been dismissed for academic reasons.

We can also help graduate students with practical advice for finishing a thesis or dissertation, offering advice on writing, committee formation, and scheduling.

Our Vision

Our vision is to become a trusted support system for students who are underserved by traditional advising systems. Whether you’re on probation, struggling with personal setbacks, or navigating graduate school challenges, we envision a future where every student has access to clear, empathetic, and expert academic support.

Our Mission

At Scarab Academics, our mission is to provide students with the tools, structure, and personalized guidance they need to overcome academic obstacles and reach their goals. We believe that success isn’t one-size-fits-all our job is to help you create a plan that works for your life, not just your transcript.

Our History

Founded by Dr. Christian Schlaerth  also known as “Dr. He-Man”  Scarab Academics was created out of a passion for helping students who often fall through the cracks. With nearly two decades of teaching and advising experience at both large universities and small liberal arts colleges, Dr. Schlaerth has worked with everyone from Division I athletes to first-generation students to those dismissed from school due to life’s challenges.

Create a plan

After the initial consultation, we will collaborate with you on creating a plan for success.

What kinds of students benefit from academic coaching?

F.A.Q

Have questions? We’ve got answers.

Find clear, honest answers to the most common questions about our services, pricing, and how Scarab Academics can support your academic journey.

You can schedule an initial, 15-minute interview for free.  That time allows you to assess whether you feel confident in Scarab Academics and allows Scarab Academics to provide you with a custom quote for everything you need—and nothing extra.  Students who ask for help in their first term require less intensive intervention than students who ask for help closer to graduation, and the cost of your proposed plan will reflect that.  You may also be offered a choice between a one-time plan that you will implement independently or ongoing consultations to check your progress and make adjustments in real time to keep you on track.

You likely have an assigned advisor or access to an academic advising center at your school.  Those resources are usually free and you should access those free resources before contacting Scarab Academics.  At some schools, advisors may be indifferent or even hostile to students who do not consider their studies their highest priority.  Academic advising centers may be great at handling common challenges but lack the resources to provide highly individualized plans for unique situations.  If you have exhausted the resources available through your school and do not have a workable plan, Scarab Academics might be able to help.  Scarab Academics can help you look at a wide variety of options, including transfer credits, online programs, and other supplements to make up credits or work ahead, and can work with you to evaluate whether changing majors or degree programs might help you complete a closely related degree on terms—including time, cost, and academic requirements—that better fit your life, especially if your life doesn’t fit a stereotypical student profile.

Dr. Schlaerth has worked with students in large research universities and small liberal arts colleges facing a variety of obstacles to completing a degree.  Division I athletes, terminally ill students, pregnant students, students struggling with addiction, and students coping with significant personal loss have turned to Dr. Schlaerth to refine their academic goals and explore opportunities to recover or accelerate their studies.  Dr. Schlaerth has served on institutional boards that review appeals of academic suspensions and expulsions and can provide insider advice on how best to handle your specific circumstances.

Dr. Schlaerth is the primary contact for most Scarab Academics inquiries.  During your consultation, Dr. Schlaerth will consider how best to help you achieve your goals, which may involve working directly with Dr. Schlaerth or another Scarab Academics consultant.  In some cases, Dr. Schlaerth may determine that your needs would be best met by another service and will make referrals to other professionals as needed.

He-Man was Dr. Schlaerth’s nickname on his rugby team.  Dr. He-Man is easier to remember and pronounce than Dr. Schlaerth.  And Dr. He-Man will work on your academic plan with the same intensity and persistence that earned him his rugby nickname.

Yes, Scarab Academics can pair post-graduate professional students with a suitable advisor or refer them to other services as needed.

Depending on their needs and circumstances, graduate and post-graduate professional students may benefit from working with Dr. Schlaerth or other consultants who work with Scarab Academics.  During your initial consultation, Dr. Schlaerth will explore what specifically you need help with, and how best to get that help.

The initial 15-minute consultation is free and done over the phone or through Zoom.

After the initial phone call, we can discuss prices going forward.

Every case that we deal with is unique.  Costs will depend on the services required and the time we put into creating and executing a plan.  A variety of levels will be offered, and you can choose which level best suits your needs
